Press release of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

On September 21, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 72ndUN General Assembly.

Mr Lavrov and Mr Guterres exchanged views on topics on the current agenda of the UN General Assembly and Security Council. Special attention was paid to the developments in Ukraine, Syria and DPRK. Specifically, at the request of his interlocutor Mr Lavrov laid out in detail the gist of Russia’s initiative to set up a UN Mission for protection of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine’s southeast. The two officials also discussed the political process in Syria with a focus on the complementary efforts of the Astana and Geneva platforms. They also discussed ways to end the impasse in the settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, stating, among other things, that attempts to resolve this crisis by force are unacceptable.

Sergey Lavrov also voiced his support for efforts to reform the UN, while speaking out against the erosion of member states’ prerogatives and for an inclusive discussion as well as intergovernmental consultations at all stages of the Secretary-General’s reform undertakings.
